16 Days Campaign on Violence Against Women

Violence against women occurs in every society - rich or poor - having different forms of manifestation. One of the crudest forms of violence is the one, which takes place subtly and is sanctioned in the name of culture. Cultural beliefs and practices draw a very negative image of women who are to be suppressed and domesticated, which we all accept unconditionally. Such deliberate subjugation of women is pure violence and negation of human rights.

Through different activities at different places we have involved a large number of people - women, men and children. Encouraged them to think about women's status in the society, acknowledge and appreciate the important role women play at home and outside. Thereby break the myth, as projected and nurtured by our culture that women are the burden to be possessed, dominated and subjugated.

Here we share with you a brief report on those.

To raise awareness on the issue, Swadhina observes 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence on varied theme for `Creating a Culture that says No to Violence against Women'. Initiated by Global Leadership Programme of Rutgers University (USA) this campaign is observed annualy from 25 November to 10 December. As a part of our Non-violence and Social Empowerment effort we highlight on how the Culture of Sub-ordination foster and perpetuate the cycle of violence in women's life and prevent them to celebrate life fully and freely.A girl has to fit in the culturally defined role - be at home or outside. Opposing this prevalent concept of women as a burden, commodity or property, there is need to focus on the positive images of women, which go mostly unrecognized in our society. This culture of sub-ordination has to be challenged and denounced as violence towards the greater goal of women's empowerment.

During the campaign Support Badges are worn throughout the Fortnight from 25 November to 10 December 2002 as a gesture of support towards the cause. Along with each badge a bilingual leaflet explaining why the Fortnight is being observed is distributed. The use of such badges in a small town and villages is quite effective in creating awareness on the issue.Women's Rally is an essential part of this campaign where women from the neighbouring villages participate holding posters on peace and violence against women.

In Calcutta the annual theme workshop in a auditorium is a regular feature. While village representive present their case studies there are invariably street theatre, group songs and dances presented by Swadhina slum groups.

Gender Meets
These are one day interactions held at all the Swadhina state units. Reading theme paper, group discussion on gender sensitization and narrating case studies and part of this effort. On an average 50 women participate. Last year alone there were 20 such events held.

8th March, Women's Day
Every year women's Day is observed in a big way with seminar, drawing speech competition. This is held separately by all the state units of Swadhina.

Women's Organisation and Social Empowerment
Enhancement of women's organisation at the local level is one of the basic requirements of women's empowerment. Village level Women's Organisations have been formed at all the working villages of Swadhina. It is a matter of great satisfaction when the village level committees formed become self-sufficient to take their own decisions and are able to carry on the work when Swadhina withdraws from their area. The village level Women's Committees, in Tamil Nadu, are very strong now. Their present membership strength is about400. The members are gradually gaining recognition as village leaders. One of our Animators has been elected to the local government administrative body. This is surely a sign of women's growing empowerment. In Midnapore area, the 10 village level women's committees are very strong and are in regular contact with the local administration. They have been able to secure many schemes from the government departments through their constant endeavour. The total membership strength of the 10 committees is about 300. Here too an active swadhina local worker has been elected to the Panchayat. Jharkhand has 25 women's committees with about 750 membership.

Children's Programme
A drawing contest for slum children was held, on the occasion of Swadhina birth anniversary, on 27 December 2002 where 42 children participated. Each participant got a prize. Held at the sprawling lawn of Ballygunge Church, it was an occasion of fun and joy for the children. The prizes were given to them at a simple function held in the evening where they presented many cultural items. This was indeed reflective of their multifarious talents. - To enhance the general knowledge of the women and children, at Midnapore a Quiz Contest was conducted on 15 August 2002, on the occasion of Independence Day. 30 children and 16 women participated in the contest. Saplings were given as prizes. Total 53 children and 22 women were present in this programme which began with hoisting of the flag to observe the Independence day.

Along with a card depicting the crucial need for communal harmony, decrying the happenings in Gujarat these posters were to sent to over 500 NGO and other friends of Swadhina across the country.
